CHAPTER 7

The Addiction

My lucky day! I received a call this morning for an interview with Bank of America in midtown Atlanta. I wore a navy suit from Macy’s, accented with a crisp white shirt, a red tie, and a polished pair of black Stacy Adams dress shoes. I truly looked like a corporate professional. I wanted so badly to get my foot in the door with this bank and now I had my opportunity. The interview was scheduled at 11:00 a.m. I arrived thirty minutes earlier with a notepad and pen ready to secure my position as a customer service representative. I was nervous, but I walked into my interview and killed it. I answered all my questions thoroughly and made sure that I was articulate when I spoke. The hiring manager seemed pleased then told me that I should hear something back with in a few days. I walked out of that office confident that I had obtained the job.

After the interview, I went to pick up Craig at his house, and we went out to lunch at Applebee’s. At lunch, I noticed that Craig was a little distant. “What’s wrong with you? You haven’t said much of anything since I picked you up! Is everything okay?” I asked with concern. “No man, I’m just tired of niggas! I’ve been dating this dude on and off, and he’s cheating on me, so I’m cheating on him!” Craig said. “Do you love him?” I asked. “I think I do, but he doesn’t know what he wants! He’s fucking around with me and with some of the females in the hood. He just got out of the pen a few months ago, and he tells me that he don’t want people knowing he fuck with niggas, so he can’t be seen with me all the time to throw people off! That shit hurt like hell. I ain’t trying to put that nigga on blast!” He responded. “Why don’t you just break it off with him then?” I questioned as I took a bite out of my burger. “Because he is a good dude, and he don’t act like a sissy, and he help me when I need money! How am I going to find another dude like that? I just let him do him, and I’m gone do me! When he ready to fuck wit me again, I’ll be here,” Craig responded as he slightly rolled his eyes and cocked his fitted to the side. “Just be careful, yo. You deserve better! If you need me, just call me. I don’t care how late it is,” I offered as I threw my napkin on the table and signaled for the check.
